Petrol thieving sh*tbags

I park my car on my quiet road in North London and thieves have prized open the (vacuum assisted locking) petrol flap on the car and drained the tank. This has happened before but I thought I was just being forgetful that I didn't have petrol in the tank. This time I know I had half a tank left and not only that, the bds chipped the paint. The ****s. Could have been worse. Could very well have been the work of professional criminals. Has this happened to anyone here? Did you contact the police?



As an aside, Mercedes R107s have a flap that is clearly easy enough to open when locked to get to the non-locking cap. I looked for a locking cap that would fit and couldn't find any then by chance checked if my 1975 BMW e9 locking cap fits, and it does perfectly. Might be a useful tip to other R107 owners.

You need a small explosive charge that goes off if it's forced. Nothing big, just enough to blow a hand off.

In the perineum between Upper Holloway and Crouch End. I think the way to reduce the chances of this type of thing (when parallel parking) is to park the car so the fuel filler cap is facing the road rather than facing the pavement where they can skulk in the shadows.

A copper just came round to take my particulars. Impressed that they feel that this is serious enough to warrant investigation.

A couple of years ago the locking petrol cap was forced off one of my minis and the petrol pinched. Its very annoying. The damage to the tank neck means that I cannot get a cap to seal correctly so can only fill 3/4 full so as to prevent petrol escaping with a full tank when cornering.

Yes, I also had petrol stolen from my mini a few years back. They stole the cap too.

Just an update on this. The police came round this morning which rather surprised me as I contacted them half jokingly assuming they wouldn't be interested. To my surprise and delight they've taken it rather seriously. I got a phone call from the metropolitan police forensic department which was neat but unfortunately because I contaminated the crime scene by fixing the chipped paint and bending the locking mechanism back into place, they cannot dust for prints. Must be part of a sting or something larger than I had relised.

Wonder if there is enough room behind the filler flap to fit a redundant air bag assembly?
