Hi,

I've ordered a new golf R through a lease company and I'm just in my cooling off period. How do I go about getting a decent test drive?

I presume if I walk into any VW garage and mention I've already pulled the trigger they will fob me off, so what tactic would you guys use?

Do I be honest from the start as ultimately I've still purchased from VW, or do I pretend I'm interested in buying from them?

I just want to make sure I've don't the right thing, and also she the mrs for the first time!

Chances are you'll probably have to lie at some point to avoid being fobbed off.

You could check the VW website and see if there is a book test drive option.

Eta if your going the honesty route then be flexible on the timing. Basically there is not much incentive for a salesman to spend time with you when he could be making money from another customer. So gunning for a sat afternoon Appt is probably not going to work. IMO

I was in the same position, cheeky white lie got me the test drive. Told the sales later that week about the lease offer which he obviously couldn't match, said I would be silly to pass on it.

Speak to the lease co. They will contact their prefered supplier for a demo, if they can't/won't, then do without.

When deciding on my company car, I simply walked into VW dealership, said I was interested in the car, mentioned it would be a company lease and asked for a test drive. 10 minutes later I was out for a test drive, which lasted just under an hour.

The salesman was very good and not at all bothered I wouldn't be doing a deal with him.

Just be honest.

Well I've booked one for today, might just tell him after what deal I've seen and see if he can match it (which he won't) as it was cheap. Then I might not feel too bad...

I'm so glad my salary doesn't rely on customers anymore.

Why the fk would you need to test drive AFTER you have "pulled the trigger"?

This.

You want cheap prices offered by companies with no overheads like a main dealer, whilst enjoying the service that a main dealer offers.

Essentially you want your cake and eat it.

I used to get people doing this all the time. As annoying as it was we weren't allowed to turn people away just because they weren't buying from us.

Not sure I'd have put it quite like that, but I'm with the basic puzzlement.

You're about to have a three year test drive. You've signed the contract. Isn't it a bit late to be thinking about whether you've bought the right thing?

What if you find you don't like it? Will you be trying to cancel your order? What will it cost you?

Nothing, because you can apply the "credit" the lease company agree to extend you to any car, they don't really care what it is. They don't order anything from VW until after the cooling off period.

That said, I got a quote on a cheap Golf R from LPG, went to the dealer to test drive, and they offered me the same cheap deal but without having to wait for LPG so I signed with them.

I didn't test drive before I ordered mine.

It's bloody fantastic, just do it.

As a car salesman, I'd be extremely pissed off if I was the victim of your test drive lie! Put yourself in the salesmans shoes - you're commission based, trying to earn a living and somebody just uses you for a demo with no intention of buying. You'd be pissed off too, right??? Just contact the lease company and ask for a demo, chances are you won't get one now that you've ordered but that's your own fault for jumping the gun.

This is one reason I'm not keen on commission based sales by franchisees.

I'd love to be able to go to VW and test drive their cars with no games regardless of how I'm getting one.

If you read his post he states he is within the cooling off period, which implies he can cancel without penalty if he doesn't like it.

Basically, you want a test drive centre with salaried salesman?

Something which will never work!

Imagine you've got 10 salesmen all on £45k, where is their motivation? Who's going to get up off of their arse to come and speak to you on the forecourt? Not me, because I'm still going to earn my £45k regardless of whether you buy a car or not!! Which salesman is going to fight to get you the deal you want with their Sales Manager? Not me, because I'm still going to earn my £45k whether you buy a car or not!!

Do you know what, that's actually a very good point. The traditional view is that the salesman on commission is the enemy of the buyer but this point highlights it works both ways.

I earn a 45k salary but I do my job and go the extra mile regardless of the fact I could put my feet up and get away with it.

Really don't feel commission based sales is always the best answer.
