XK8 or XJS?

Classic Motoring have an interesting article on the XK8 (x100) this month and also a comparison between a Stag and an XJ-S 4.0 convertible (according to the article, the XJ-S is the better car but the Stag is the better classic car'

A number of comments are made about the XJ-S's desirability as a Classic Car - 'This (the XK8) is the car that is killing off the XJ-S as a classic' and 'some experts now reckon that it's (the XJ-S) missed its slot and may never achieve classic status - ever'

Fair comments or not?

Well, a nice late XjS cabrio was £20k in 1998 at 3 years old, and the same car is still £20k today. So somebody likes them.

Sounds like that has been for sale for a very long time!

XJS is a good looking car but as with everything take your pick fro £2k to £20k.

It sounds to me like the writer just doesn't like the XJ-S! I would choose one over a Stag without a second's hesitation.

In my view the XJ-S has already achieved classic status. A good one is a sought after and coveted thing. As with any old Jag, there is so much that can go wrong on one, which can cost such an enormous sums to put right, that there are plenty of very cheap XJ-S Jags out there too. They tend to be cheap for a reason, and will swiftly turn expensive if you have the urge to improve it.

If anything gets squeezed, it could be the XK8. They don't have the sense of occasion of the XJ-S somehow - and lack the brutal performance of the new 5.0 XKR. I hope I am wrong; they're pretty cars.
