Daft question, but can I play Nintendo 2DS games on an original "flip" Nintendo DS?

Or is a 2DS a cut down 3DS?

My 6-year old has seen an advert for Mario Kart 7 and is itching to play it!

I very much doubt the consoles are forward compatible between generations. Nintendo tend to be good at keeping their products backward compatible though, so the DS games should play on 2DS.

No.

Last Gen:
2D version = Nintendo DS

Current Gen:
3D version = Nintendo 3DS
2D version = Nintendo 2DS

So yeah, the 2DS is a cut down 3DS, and 3DS/2DS games won't run on a "DS".

pretty much

the 2ds and 3ds games even have a little tab on the side so it does not fit into a ds lite/dsi.

the 3ds is not just a ds that does stereoscopic 3d, its a whole different console like ps2 and ps3

edit:bloody autocorrect

Nintendo shot themselves in the foot with the names IMO. Like the "Wii-U", many people thought it might be an add on for a Wii, as opposed to the "next gen" console.

You can pick up a 3DS for about £60-70 second hand these days. I sold mine with a game for £75 and it was mint.

Cheers chaps - I thought that might be the case but Nintendo do seem to like confusing people!

A 2D version of a 3D machine while still selling the original 2D machinenuts

He's only just got into the DS (my old one I bought about 10 years ago!) and is very happy playing Mario / Mario Kart and something called Rabbids so I'll hang off getting him a new one for a bit.
