Was looking to scratch an itch in the close future and jump into a 996TT. Have had a good drive of one a couple years back and have been hooked ever since. Have always kept an eye on them in the classifieds and now decided its time to maybe take the plunge.

However....I cant help but keep looking at GT-R's!!!

I'm hoping there are some helpful chaps, and ladies among yourselves who could maybe help me decide what would be the better route, from experience.

My circumstances.
Will be used as a kind of daily driver and travel to work and back. I'm fortunate enough to be in a position that I get more time off work than actually being there, so its not really going to be used everyday. Have another car that will be used for transporting the family and dog about, so its kinda a treat for myself but ideally want it to be everyday friendly, if you get my drift.

Have spoken to a couple of GT-R owners in the past but couldn't get past "you NEED to get one" when asked what they are like to run on a daily basis. Budget is around the 30K mark and running one shouldn't pose too much of a problem, obviously if it doesnt fall apart every 10 minutes.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I apologise if i have posted this in the wrong section.

Try both. Long term, I'd say 996, as it will still always be a 911 Turbo whereas the Nissan will be something old and Jap no doubt totally forgotten in the shadows of the latest and greatest.

It all depends on your needs, too, 996 rear seats strictly kids only, and your expectations, 996 devastatingly effective and possibly the very opposite of a chuckable car, it just sticks and goes.

I can't comment on the Nissan, closest I got to that class of vehicle was the Evo Tommi.

Perhaps a 996 GT3 could interest you too, if you want both...

The GT-R is the better car in virtually every respect, but the 911 is a 911, and the heritage just makes it special.

Yamaha make better violins than Stradivarius, but I know which one I'd rather have.

I'm in exactly the same position. Have a family hack the wife drives when we go out with the kids, but I want a special daily drive. Like you I work from home a lot of the time therefore it won't be a daily drive as such. Have a £30k budget and I keep looking at the 996T and in particular with the x50 pack. I also am looking at alternatives but I have read the GTR can have biiiig bills. Not sure if they are scare stories, but I heard £15k for a new gearbox? Might not be true and needs more research but everything I read tells me the 996T will be a better buy, have less depreciation, lower running costs if you get a good Indy and personally I think looks better if you get one with the aero pack if you can see past the fried egg headlights......but the video above also shows why a GTR might be the one to go for. So confused.

For me I think I'm going for 996T but will also be keeping and eye on other peoples real world experience.

If you are not bothered by the badge or servicing bills, the GTR is a far more entertaining car.

that might be true.

but the better question is, what the hell are you doing to the car to need a new gearbox?

lol true....maybe racing sports bikes. But as it's a sealed unit, any issues with the gearbox = new gearbox required. Makes me twitchy. Like I say, interested to hear if it's ruined anyone's life by throwing a stupid bill.

Is the gtr cheaper

For modern gizmo and modern cut edge looks gtr

I'm growing as a Porsche fan, but the current Boxster looks superb and makes the old 911 look old IMO

Between the 996 and GTR I'd definitely go for the GTR. 997.2 GT3RS though however...

Seriously? I think the egg on the face of many manufacturers after Nissan came out of nowhere and pulled their pants down with an incredibly performing and ridiculously good VFM GT-R will not be forgotten.

Honestly this is not even close.

The GTR is nothing like the old Supras or EVOs/Imprezas, its in an entirely different class.

The fact that values for the oldest GTRs are still hovering above 30k says everything about them. these were cars that cost 53k new (Fully loaded of course)

Its superior in every way to a 997 Turbo let alone a 996 with its bakelite plastics and mid 90s Audi climate control. Its a fine car the 996 Turbo (For the late 90s) but its comprehensively and completely outclassed by the super Nissan.

The GTR is a supercar and looking after it properly costs money but even the earliest cars are world class performance cars.

THE sports car bargain of the century to date

Well yes,

But they're pushing 100k now

Any GT3 has "some" aspects of its driving experience that the GTR cannot match, the engine, the super tactile steering and feedback and the manual box of course but they are all miles out of budget

And no GT3, even the Gen2 RS is slower than even a stock 2008 GTR
