So what's the craic here, a friend of mine is selling his car, currently sorned and not insured.
No MOT on it either, and there's a buyer lined up who will take it if it has the MOT.

Now, I know he can drive it SORNed direct to the MOT station, but what about insurance, as he was quoted about £150 for day insurance.

I was under the impression he just needs to find someone with a suitable DOC policy that doesn't mention the car has to be insured by someone else.

Any solutions as he's checking out getting it transported instead.

The car will need insurance for the public road. If it's being trailered it won't be an issue.

You can drive the car without tax providing it is a direct route to the MOT testing station and the car is pre-booked in. If stopped by the police they will check with the testing station.

Last time I did it, one day insurance was about £20??

The only way he'll otherwise manage it is on a trailer. Hardly any insurance companies do third party rights now on an uninsured vehicle, most state there must be another policy in place. I've literally today insured myself with Axa and the certificate has got that on it.

With regards tax and ticket, as above, if it's a pre-booked test it's fine to drive there.

Never heard of that, my understanding is that DOC cover requires the car to be insured and taxed (specific wordings may vary).

if day insurance is too rude , call the local garages and ask if they can collect either with thier own trade insurance or a tow truck

as above most garages will have a set of trade plates, cant imagine them charging a fortune if their local to collect and return the car.

not all policies mention another policy being in place for AOC cover. my most recent policy on our focus just says to drive any other vehicle not belonging too.

Yep, that's pretty much what I thought, it is possible if you have one of the specific policies that says any other car not belonging to the policy holder and it would be third party only.

It does mean that if the car is parked up in the street and you get out, it's uninsured as the insurance stops with it, but considering it will be going straight to and from the MOT station without stopping for the tax exemption, it wouldn't be a problem anyway.

I guess the main part is whether anything in this continuous insurance malarkey has made any changes to this.

In general terms (ie the driver is insured under their DOC cover despite the vehicle being otherwise uninsured) - no, it hasn't.

Make sure they carry proof of their insurance to drive your vehicle though (and make sure the MoT place has written down your name and the vehicle's registration mark) wink .
