What's it called? - the bit an SPD cleat fixes to.

SO I have some new spangly shoes which accept both SPD-SL and SPD cleats.

I want to keep SPD as I have them on my MTB and I already have the pedals and cleats.

There is a blanking plate (for want of a better word) in the sole of the shoe for the SPD fitting, but nothing to screw the cleat to.

What is this part called? so I can go and find a pair.

I imagine that the blanking plate is in the holes for the cleat...

Sometimes the blanking plate has to be ripped off to expose the fixings. My Specialized shoes were like this, whereas my wife's Diadora shoes unscrewed as per the suggestion above. Mine cannot be refitted (without resorting to glue).

Just been googling and it seems a lot of people are asking the same question about these particular shoes.

It seems the only option is to cut out the insole to replace the blank with a plate. As I don't really fancy doing that and potentially knackering my new shoes it looks like they are SPD-SL only in effect

What shoes are they? If they advertise themselves as SPD/SPD-SL compliant then they should be

I just bought a pair of those, I'll check the box to see if there was anything in there that I missed but i dont recall seeing any blanking plates, I only needed SPD-SL compatibility though so just bolted some cleats on and got on the bike. I cant imagine you need to take chunks out of the insole to get SPDs to fit though.

Are you saying you can't simply uncover those two slots to expose the nuts behind, or that there are (ahem) no nuts at all?

If they are covers, I can't get them off.

Looking through the Q&A sections of retailers selling these, there are a few people asking the same question. It appears there are no nut plates (whatever they're called) under the covers, and the only way to remove them is from inside but the insole is glued down (there is a separate removable insole too) so would need to be cut to get the covers out to be replaced with a plate.

Can you check with the manufacturer or supplier?

Could be a chance they do two versions of the shoe, one for SL, one for SPD and you wouldn't want to rip the sole apart only to find there is nothing there....

Yep, this is what I need, but it turns out it can't be fitted without cutting the insole, something I really don't want to do.
