I am looking for some help sussing out an oil pressure problem with my Chim Rover V8. I would ideally like a recommendation?

The car hasn't moved in a while (around 6 months) as it had some electrical issues (hopefully now resolved). I saw the pressure gauge was zero and replaced the sensor - still the same. Not sure where to go next.

If someone has any recommendations or can help then it would be much appreciated. I am loathed to pick someone at random.

Cheers

Do you have access to a mechanical oil pressure gauge?

(Chim owner visits Wedge forum for tech advice, a proud moment for Wedgists!)

To add: Might need the ritual priming of the oil pump.

Assuming the pressure gauge is of the electrical type and not capillary, there are only four things it can be. Either the sensor, the gauge, the wiring or the fuse. As you've already changed the sensor only three possibilities remain. Next, I would check the gauge by bypassing the live on the sensor end to the earth to see if there is any movement of the gauge. I would do this with the ignition on and only for a few seconds to avoid overloading the gauge. If the gauge makes any movement at all then the fuse and wiring are fine. If not check the fuses and the wiring to and from the gauge to the sensor, and check all the earthing. Usual disclaimer applies to this information. Good luck.

I must have missed the bit where the OP said he definitely had oil pressure... wink

Does the oil light start on then go out?

Echo Tony's ideas and also connect a voltmeter to the sender end of the wire (disconnected) which should show some volts if the circuit is OK, when the ignition is on.

Non-serpentine engine, then I would prime the pump first before doing anything else. Simple way first by disconnecting the king lead to the distributor and make sure the fuel pump doesn't run. Then turn it over on the starter and check: oil pressure light goes out as a minimum, best is to check oil arrives at the top end. If not take the distributor out and use a drill and adaptor to run the oilpump until the oilpressure light goes out. If ok, connect everything up and start the engine, still checking that the oil pressure light goes and stays out.

Even simpler - is it a remote filter? Remove filter, squirt half a pint of oil down the centre hole. Replace filter, job done. Oh, and you don't have to reset the ignition timing, find your drill, etc, etc...

But we shill don't know - OP - does the oil light go out?

Thanks for all the pointers...I will give the suggestions a go when/if it stops raining long enough!

Hopefully it just needs primed again as suggested! Certainly removing the oil filter seems a bit easier...

The oil light goes out when it starts...just the gauge is showing zero.

Will update when I have had a go!

Cheers
