Fuel line replacement
Discussion
Read a few bits recently regarding split / leaking fuel lines and the potential fire risk.
I am thinking that this is one job that is probably best done as a piece of mind thing rather than waiting till it needs doing and may be too late!
Has anybody had this job completed at a garage? Just wondered what sort of labour would be charged to carry this out, I imagine the actual hoses themsoves are fairly cheap?

You could start by replacing the front ones with these .

bloody hell they are adding some TVR tax on those fuel lines - braided 8mm hose is normally about £10 a meter tops
Its the labour. Awkward job in difficult location, and resealing the plenum correctly to avoid air leaks, or your fuelling is all over the place. You could leave it, but if your pipes are like mine you could end up with a fuel inferno just above your feet as the V Power squirts under pressure onto the exhaust manifold.

+1 Can't be left, too risky, at least check the existing lines, if you don't fancy taking plenum off to have a proper look invest in a telescopic inspection mirror or similar. All IMHO of course !You could leave it, but if your pipes are like mine you could end up with a fuel inferno just above your feet as the V Power squirts under pressure onto the exhaust manifold.

Noticed your old lines were R6, I am fairly sure you need R9 to cope with the ethanol now in most fuel. [ The petrol companies don't have to tell you if they use 5% or less in their mix.]
I will have a look tomorrow and see what type he used to replace them. Those pipes were on the car when i bought it from a dealer. TVR guy I went to (not the same place) nearly had a coronary when i showed him. They had just passed an MOT too......QBee said:

I mean the link that Daz posted. You could leave it, but if your pipes are like mine you could end up with a fuel inferno just above your feet as the V Power squirts under pressure onto the exhaust manifold.

I know how much of a pain in the arse it is, i'm currently replacing all mine, it's a nightmare
I bet you have that convoluted hose running from left to right under the bulk head
it just makes things a little trickier you should not need to cut anything with the plenum removed its just fiddly that's all
make sure you use proper fuel clips not Jubilee style like TVR fitted, hope these links help at least you will know what your looking for Brett, however you will struggle to get these brands in the UK to this spec so try Car Builder Solutions and companies like kit car builders must have a huge demand for this stuff http://ww2.gates.com/europe/brochure.cfm?brochure=... and http://www.goodyearep.com/ProductsDetail.aspx?id=1...

You tit Alex
just how much range do you think your new mini fuel tank will give you now ? you will be lucky to get off the drive
you can only run fuel tanks that size with LPG

I trust you got a grant from Brussels to cover the cost, or does it not run on the kind of gas produced by brussels?
yeah i've got the proper clips, braided lines for the engine bay (just because i like the look).
I ran full aeroquip lines on my last MK1 Escort build but couldn't be bothered with the expense for this one.
The lines were replaced 8 years ago according to the receipts and they are all perished already, this bloody car is turning into a full nut/bolt restoration.
I do have that crap heater pipe across the bulk head making it harder to access and the engine seems to sit further back than others i've seen, it's a 4.6 instead of the original 4.0 so don't know if they are a slightly different shape?
Plenum removed, still cannot find any way to reach down to the lines on the bulk head. Do you have to access from underneath?

Replaced mine when I backed out the garage and fuel was pissing out from under the car - worrying moment.
it was only a tiny pinhole leak - hardly noticable even when I knew where it was - but tons of fuel came out when the pump was on....
hoses were 15 years old at that point (ironically they were all held on with jubilee clips and had been ok all those 15 years)
used JonnyZ's kit and it was a bit of a pain to do (especially behind the plenum - which you can do without removing it but you have to commit by cutting the hose and then destroying the clips with some snipe-nosed pliers to get the ends off.
As other have said there will be a bit of petrol about so be careful...
you CAN get to the 2 engine bay pipes but you need small hands and be able to kind of see the pipe in your mind when you do it...
I wanted to do it myself as I didn't want to find the garage hadn't done it right by the car catching on fire whilst I was driving it.
