Anyone got a Fernhurst sports exhaust on their Chimaera? Would love to know your thoughts when compared to stock/other options.

If anyone has a good sounding set-up on a Chimaera and is going to Burghley on Sunday and wouldn't mind giving me a listen would be much appreciated!?

Do you mean you have seen a car at Fernhurst that has a sports exhaust fitted? I could be wrong but I reckon that seeing as most of their cars have them they could just be sleeved. I'm sure someone who has brought one from them will be along soon to confirm.

The first Chimaera I test drove was at theirs and was a 500 with a sports exhaust. It sounded like thunder but I had nowt to compare with.

No not seen or heard, just looking around and having bought my car there I asked them and they have suggested it (obviously!). Done by removing the perforated pipes from inside the silencer and replacing them with a solid pipe apparently.

Yes it`s called a tractor eek Its not one of there exhausts ! all they do is use a can opener on the silencer box then remove the wadding and perforated pipes .

Next step is to weld to bits of rusty tube in place of the perforated pipe ,put the wadding back and weld back the can opener damage .

The result is a tractor laugh I`m not joking .

Bought a Chim from them many moons ago and had a "Sports Exhaust" (read sleeved) fitted, it sounded bloody marvellous as many stated. A few years later I bought a Tuscan Fernhurst also sleeved this beasty, that too sounded awesome.

What they used to do back then was to just remove the tail pipe (box) and sleeve them with a piece of 53mm OD 2mm thick tube (IIRC) and this was slid inside the existing tail pipe and tack welded into position. No wadding was removed.

On both my cars IMHO, the sound was excellent.

Its up to you ! every one has there own idea of a sports exhaust .

The problem with something that unrefined will be the constant noise on cruise ,it will drive you mad .

An exhaust note does not need to be loud to sound good .

My number one choice except the tuned manifolds which are out of my reach would be

1 Pre cats out ,main cat in and the JP ACT sports exhaust
2 Pre cats out ,ACT Y piece or Clives Y piece and a standard exhaust .

Or if you know anyone woi can fabricate you can convert your exhaust by removing the silencer box and use two separate silences (rolled stainless steal ,perforated pipe and wadding . I made an ACT copy .

It is significantly louder. They did it on my old 4.0lt and it sounded very good, particularly as the 4.0lt sounds a bit better then the others imo. On a long drive it was loudest cruising at 60mph, and 90ish was quiet-ish. They're doing a 5.0lt for me this week so interested to see how it compares. I can't have one without it now.

Cheers Daz,
Careful what you ask for, the rusty pipe either side of the perf pipe is what one of our reputable dealers installed and called a sports exhaust, a piece of rust pipe and had the cheek to charge £150 for doing it. He did offer to remove it for a price. It will be a long time before I can offord it though.

Before you sleeve the exhaust, just check with your inner hooligan as to whether you will want to do track days. They have noise limits, and sleeving the exhausts takes you well over those limits.

An alternative to welding pipe is to wrap the perf pipe. I did it last year. thin layer of wadding wrapped with exhaust manifold bandage. You can choose how much, full length or half way. I tried it full length and it sounded just like the sleeved, too loud for me so I un-wrapped it and went half way. Sounds great and is reversible easily enough.

I've never heard a tractor sound like a tvr ...your talking Tosh Daz, personal opinion is just that personal.
My offords converted silencer doesn't drone at speed and sounds great.

But again my opinion.

Sleeving is such a great way of improving the sound for very little cost. For what it's worth I think it sounds good and until I can afford a CF Y Piece it will do for me.

I think it sounds like the pre cats out is first step and then a clive F Y piece.

Anyone got one that is going to Burghley this weekend?

Also, will any garage be able to take pre-cats out for me? I'm not sure its a job i should take on myself!

Yes to both questions.
Mat Smith Sports Cars in Downham Market would be where I would go. ShiDevil takes his Orange T350 there - I see it there regularly. Mat has looked after my car, and fitted my Clive Y and decatted the manifolds, amongst a host of other jobs. He lends you a courtesy car for free......
