I want to test the stepper motor out of the car; anyone know what voltage they use?

Doesn't work like that... unscrew it, plug in, and see whether it cycles on the ign being turned on without starting

I'm not sure if it operates at ignition on unless you start the car. However, on turning the ignition off, it will attempt to draw the operating plunger back into the body causing a small chatter at the end of it's travel.

You cant test it without a stepper motor control circuit, as this allows you to switch between the coils inside the motor that makes it rotate in steps. If you want to see it move, unplug it with the engine running at idle, then stop the engine and remove it, and let the engine cool. Then replug the stepper and get someone else to cycle the ignition on / off (dont start) whilst you look at it, and you should see it retract as you power off, ready for the next cold start. It will do this just once.
