Mrs Seeker Wants a New Car

Mrs Seeker's 2002 C220CDI Coupé is getting a bit rusty and she wants a change. Although she claims she doesn't mind what car it is, experience shows that she has a preference for the more 'prestigious' end.

As a bare minimum, the car must be:

Automatic.
Able to return 40mpg+ on a long run. (Annual Mileage = 10-12k)
Able to hold 3 bags of garden rubbish in the boot. (This one is negotiable I think...)
No bigger than an Audi A6.
Not "boaty" but at the same time not a harsh ride either.
2004 or newer.

Budget = £7500

She seems to prefer coupés but saloons seem to be OK too - previous cars she's had and enjoyed have included: Audi C5 A6 2.4 SE, Audi 2.6 Cabriolet, Ford Probe, Ford Cougar and the current Merc.

I've considered so far an MB CLK270CDI, BMW E46 320CD, Jaguar S-Type Diesel.

What else should we be looking at?

Thanks for that - it would be ideal but it'll be tricky getting one of those in budget from a dealer.

Sorry, but people are getting so pissed off with these constant "what car" threads, especially when your try to fool the population by not putting "what car" in the thread title.

My old man runs a CLK 320cdi. Chopped his 270 in for it. He liked the 270, likes the 320 even more, He's seeing 40mpg. His is Avantgarde, all the toys, nice thing.

I am not intending to ignore the brief, just trying to suggest something a bit "different".

Volvo S60, very comfortable, reliable, a good diesel engine with plenty of power/torque and good economy on the longer runs.

Might not the this "premium" badge you talk about but it's a cracking motor and you'd do well to atleast have a look in my opinion.

No requirement for a diesel- just 40+mpg on a run, 30+ average.

I'd like her to have a Boxster - I think it's exactly what she wants but she doesn't seem to like them. I guess she needs to drive it.
