Might be a stupid question but here goes.
I've just been reading that they may have found a new signal for the Black Box recorder on Flight MH370. If they find the box they will then use divers to go down and recover it. The cost of searching for the box and the risk of sending divers down is massive but obviously it means we will know what happened to the plane. Is there any reason why the black box doesn't record to a cloud storage device instead of a physical box?

There's a long thread about MH370 on NP&E, some people have said it's basically difficult and very expensive to broadcast live data to 'the cloud' because obviously they operate far from usual mobile signals. I errr... see what you've done there.The BB will give recordings of internal conversations in the cockpit. It also logs instrument readouts and control movements, which will be vital in determining what happened. None of this information is available without the black box.

If it's where they think it is, divers will be going nowhere near it - it's far too deep. I've just been reading that they may have found a new signal for the Black Box recorder on Flight MH370. The 'Black Box' consists of a flight data recorder and a cockpit voice recorder. The cockpit voice recorder is always on, and will record conversations and noises in the cockpit. This includes any emergency beeps, stall warnings and occasionally, engine noises.What information will the "black box" actually give? The flight data recorder records time, altitude, airspeed and direction the plane is heading. However more modern recorders can obtain data regarding fuel, individual flaps on the wings and the auto-pilot system.

The plane, which is made of Alu that's what - 5mm thick in some places? Hit the water at a few hundred miles an hour - there will be no 'walking' onto anything - it'll be a remote sub sifting through a pile of scrap basically.Mr Trophy said:

IIRC it gives more than just recorded voices, it gives some telemetry to. There can be 2 one that records data and one that records voices, but they can be one unit if I am remembering this right.What information will the "black box" actually give? My ex FIL was a 747 pilot and he said that very rarely do they have an issue, very tough. i have been unlucky as i have been on a flight where one failed on take off.
On some airlines i think they fit 2 but i might be confusing the boxes being separate.

In terms of recovering it, if it's where they think it is it's a chuffing long way down. About half the depth James Cameron got to but there can't be that many submersibles capable of working down there.

Airplanes contact ATC and land bases via VHF radio, it's old tech amplitude modulated and it's not designed or indeed able to carry digital data. This is the only reliable and constant link which and airplane has, you can get voice on inmarsat but I believe coverage is patchy and you have to pay for it which if you go over to the other thread and read up about Malaysian air they were not fond of paying inmarsat for the extras, if they were we would already know the exact location of the plane.
Anything else would be new tech which brings us on the the point of legal and industry regulations that need to be complied with to get avionics equipment into service. The list is long and incredibly time consuming, of course nothing is impossible but it's not likely without legislation.

The point being they keep it to 30 days battery life due to cost.

If it had a 5mm skin it would never get off the ground!Its more like 2mm in most places
