Best Way to Sell, Autotrader, EBay etc.?
Discussion
I will shortly be looking to sell my car, and not having sold privately for a number of years now, I'm not sure which is the best medium. Last time I sold privately autotrader was the only real option. However, it seems that eBay seems quite popular these days.
If it helps with feedback, car is very high mileage (160,000) 6 year old mid range prestige car and will probably be In a price bracket between £7,500 and £8,500.
Was thinking of getting a valuation from WBAC, then running an eBay auction with the WBAC offer plus £500 (to make selling privately worthwhile) as the reserve price. Should I just run a classified on eBay? Or I could just list it on autotrader, but i just sense that eBay seems to be stealing a march on autotrader these days.
Thoughts most welcome. Gumtree has been excluded from the running from the start.
Thanks
G.

The bay, autotrader and Pistonheads all have their strengths and weaknesses. Classified on eBay seems pretty good to me. Price tha car sensibly put a good advert together give plenty of good clear photos and use an attractive description. Cars sell if properly presented and sensibly priced. I tend to use two out of the three silutaneously that seem to work. I never accept paypal on cars.
I was looking for a car recently and regularly checked all the sites - in the end it came from a PH advert.
I had zero enquiries on 2 fairly priced cars on AT recently, so personally wouldn't use them again - although would of course buy from an AT advert if had what I wanted.
I sold a little van this week on ebay, listed it as a buy it now or best offer (no one will hit buy it now, so you have chances to close the deal away from ebay). Went for nearly 50% more than WeBuyAnyVan (or similar, I forget) offered - it was mechanical sound, but well worn so they would have knocked the offer further.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I think I'll probably try a classified ad on eBay and see how it goes.
I could be waiting a while to sell it, but I'll try to price it to make it attractive. It's difficult to make comparisons as there are no others out there with 160,000 on the clock. I've seen some with around 100,000 miles advertised around the £11,000 mark, so I'm thinking around £8,000 is about right.
Thanks again.

Just thought I would provide some feedback on my selling experience. Others might find it useful.
Decided to go with autotrader and eBay in the end. Car sold within 24 hours of advertising for the full asking price. Ended up getting £10k for it, and probably had over 50 enquiries for it, ranging from the chancers offering £7000-£8000 against an advertised price of £10k, to very serious buyers offering to come round immediately with cash.
Based on my experience, I would save my money and not use autotrader. Whilst it did generate a good response, the response I got through eBay was easily sufficient and it actually sold to an eBay buyer.
Really surprised with getting £10k, it was a £40,000 car new, which has retained 25% of its list value at 6 years old with 160,000 miles on it. The first owner, a lease company, took the big depreciation hit, I bought it for £15000 three years ago with 95,000 miles on the clock.

Genuine car, genuine history, genuine seller are a good combination in selling cars. Two owner cars of that quality even with higher mileage will sell well given the first three caveats. Well done and enjoy the replacement.Decided to go with autotrader and eBay in the end. Car sold within 24 hours of advertising for the full asking price. Last few vehicles I have sold have been done with ebay classifieds. I think unless the vehicles is in immaculate condition (not likely with 160k on the clock) then you want someone to view and make an offer rather than bid and haggle when they win and turn up to pay.
Th downside to ebay versus AT is the number of silly questions or offers of funny offers of part exchange.

I found I was the opposite to phpaddy, I had mine on autotrader last month and it only generated 400 views in 2 weeks and I only got 3 phone calls and 1 viewing. The guy that done the viewing ended up going for a cheaper one in worse condition!
I put it on ebay yesterday and it's already generated 300 views in less than 24 hours and has something like 40 odd watchers.
The price difference is also a factor, autotrader was like £40 for 2 weeks whereas as said earlier ebay is a lot cheaper. Also got it posted in the classifieds on here and it was only £12! For that reason I prob wouldn't use autotrader again, plus they constantly call you once your advert ends to get you to readvertise!

Ebay classified with a big stupid colourful font.
I'm not even kidding either...my WRX wasn't selling and I looked at completed listings that had and they mostly used big stupid colourful fonts (that personally would put me off completely). I grudgingly changed mine accordingly and it sold within days.
Maybe says something about people who buy Imprezas.

I think with 160K miles on it would have been by far the cheapest in its price age range...I just sold a 200K miles diesel prestige car and the phone melted for it, the buyers who couldnt really afford that model, now could due to the mileage hence the calls, similar for yours I would imagine

If you don't mind telling - what car was it?
Here's the link to the advert, obviously ended now so hopefully won't get into trouble with modsIf you don't mind telling - what car was it?

Spot on. 100% agree, I think people wanted to get into the car I was selling, but couldn't afford a normal mileage one, so mine was an attractive option. Opens up a whole new market to be honest, a market in which there is very little competition in terms of similar cars selling for the same price. With full history, most buyers seemed not to be put off by the mileage.gsr121 said:
