wheel/tyre causing vibration only under load

My car has a vibration from the front left when turning through a right corner >30mph. The vibration is the same when on throttle or when coasting.

I took it to the garage quite convinced it was a wheel bearing. They said the bearing and everything else was OK. The only thing left that was suggested was to swap the front wheels/tyres with the rear ones. I did this and now thankfully the noise is cured.

My question:
What's the fault with the wheel/tyres? All the balance weights look to be in place. The tyres are 2 year old Falkens with 3-4mm tread remaining.

Any thoughts?

Worth getting it rebalanced


It could be a buckled wheel?

Check the inside of your tyre walls for any bulging, I know you've had them off to swap them but a slight bulge in the sidewall is easily missed.

Front wheel drive ? If so it might be the CV joint.

So - given that the noise has gone since the OP swapped wheels front-to-rear, is the troublesome CV joint now on the back of the car...?

The tyre had probably featherd in a wear pattern that caused the noise, people dont bother to rotate tyres anymore and this is the result.

You could rebalance your tyres every 1,000 miles for the perfection but clearly noone is going to do such a thing just balance on getting a new tyre or if its causing steering vibrations

I'll start with the easy and cheap option and get the wheels rebalanced. I've felt around the inside of the tyre and it feels OK, but when it's off again to be balanced I'll give a closer look. It's curious that the vibration was only apparent when the tyre was under load and not when driving at a certain speed.

I would try swapping them from side to side instead of back to front.
