Recommendations for lunch on the Northumberland coast

I'm driving from the Midlands up to Edinburgh tomorrow morning, listening to a classical performance and stopping overnight, then heading back Monday morning.

Swimbo loves the sea and I thought that an alternate route (as opposed to the M6/M74/A702) down the A1 on Monday mid-morning may present an opportunity for a coastal lunch break somewhere down past Berwick as it looks very scenic. Problem is, its the one part of England I have never been to. It's a flying visit to the region and I need to know I can just pull off the main road for an hour or two and not have to faff about.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Bamburgh Castle.

One of England's hidden gems IMO.

You could punt over to Lindisfarne, but that is tide dependent.

Yummy crab sandwiches at the Ship Inn, Newton by the Sea.

The White Swan at Alnwick. the restaurant is made up from parts of the RMS Olyimpics (sister ship to the Titanic) dinning room, also you could see the castle used for Harry Potter. The other choice would be the Lord Crewe Hotel in Bamburgh great seafood and I can recomend the kippers.

We had lunch here last time we were up North. Utterly superb, and not expensive.

Ship Inn is a good shout - could even have lunch at the other pub in NbyTS then go to the Ship for a pint and stroll on beach. Was very disappointed with Fish and Chips in Seahouses - I know the hairy bikers raved about them but they are nowhere near as good as fish & chips you can get in Ripon.

Jolly Fisherman at Craster is good (ignore the older trip advisor reviews before it changed hands).

Thanks for everything so far guys - just the kind of suggestions I knew I could count on PH to deliver. The Ship looks like a good bet as the combination of a beach walk and some grub + pint without having to walk far will go down splendidly. The tide rules out Holy Island unfortunately. Will report back. Is the A1 itself close enough to the coast to get sea views on the way down? Also any obvious talivan hotspots to be mindful of (I know about the M74 for the trip up!)

The ship inn is a lovely place. You'll need to park at the pay and display at the top of the hill. Nice beer there too.

You get some good sea views on the a1 between Edinburgh and Berwick. After that it moves a little further inland. A few speed cameras on the Scottish side if the border otherwise nothing unusual.

BTW, the best fish and chips are just up the coast from Berwick, but Eyemouth's not pretty like Newton.
