What road bike for £500?

I made the impulse decision to sign up to my employers version of the 'cycle to work scheme'. My employer offers vouchers up to a £1,000 to spend at Evans and having just joined the company I was unaware of the cut off date, that was until I received an email that morning saying that all voucher requests had to be in that day. I didn't get chance to put much thought into it so plumped for £500.

Now I'm a mountain biker and I know absolutely nothing about road bikes, infact I've never even sat on one! So can anyone recommend a road bike up to £500 from Evans what would be ideal for a road bike beginner? Not sure what odds it makes but I'm 6ft 3inch.

Gear wise I ride SPDs on my mountain bike and have all the clothing but is there anything else I what I will need for the road bike?

A search on Evans' website may be an idea too. Otherwise the disappointment that Evans don't stock the Triban 5 will be a problem.

I think the cheapest Giant Defy comes in at just over £500. Are you allowed to hang it out till August/September? 2015 bikes are usually launched then and you shgould be able to find something as soon as the sales start

Failing that, go and buy a Btwin from Decathlon. Carrera TDF from Halfords is also alright for the money.

Evans have a "trade in a banger" scheme going on right now, so if you can find an old bike in a lake or on eBay for £1.50, you can get £50 off.

There's not a huge amount at Evans for £550, but the Pinnacles seem to get OK reviews.
