Hi All,

Quick question although i am fearing the worst!

Yesterday i went to put my car into 3rd gear and it popped back into neutral once i put my foot on the power, stays in 3rd with no power.

I dont have much idea when it comes to a cars mechanics, im going to take it down to my local garage after work but just wanted some ideas as to what it could be?

thanks

What kind of car is it?

It's possibly an engine/gearbox mount.

When you rev the engine, it'll want to rotate in the opposite direction from the rotating internal parts. If a mount is worn/loose/gubbed, the engine is able to rotate more than it should. This can have the effect of basically moving the engine, gearbox, and lever arm on the gearbox, to which the gear linkage is attached, away from the stick, pulling itself out of gear.
Its a 2008 Alfa Romeo Spider 2.2

im guessing its not going to be cheap!

My Volvo 940 does this in 5th gear. It will drive along fine for a while, then all of a sudden pop out into neutral.

No idea if it can be fixed or not. So i'll be keeping an eye on this thread for ideas smile

My wife's Clio started jumping out of gear, so I changed the gearbox oil and it's not done it since. Might be worth a try.

If the box is buggered, it was only £120 to get a gear put in one at a local gearbox specialist last time I needed it. Obviously that's just the price of the repair. I had to take it out, take it to the place, go back and get it and put it back in again. That was in a VW though. But a gearbox is still a gearbox at the end if the day.

Had similar things on two different cars, drive along or put power down and pop out of gear....

Low gearbox oil was the fault in both cases

Not saying it will definitely be this but worth checking first as only a few quid for some new oil

That's got the common m32 gearbox fault most vauxhalls suffer with! Had the same thing with my astra vxr. It needs a gearbox rebuild as the synchros wear out as they did with mine.

Was always called a rep fault - holding the gear lever in third while waiting to grab fourth gear
Selctor forks wear down until they fail to fully engage the gear and it jumps out
