As per the title, does the color coded strip on the rear tail light just prise off with a screwdriver or is there some better way without damaging it?

IIRC - heat from hairdryer helps. Pretty sure it's just double sided tape.

It's taped down as well as partly secured by two metal clips (on plastic guides), one at each end.

Heating with a hair dryer helps a lot and then I pried one end up until I got as far as the first 'guide'. Once past that, I managed to get some thin wire (I think that it was picture hanging wire although fishing line would probably work) under the plastic and then used a sawing motion to cut through the tape, down as far as the other guide. Then I used the wire again to cut through the remaining tape.

I then reapplied them to the new lights with some new double sided tape.

Please don't use a screwdriver. You will scratch and/or crack the plastic if you do. Use soft plastic trim removal tools when prying delicate parts.
