Buying a bike for the frameset

Frameset is £1400, 105 spec'd bike is £2000 - would you go to the hassle of buying a bike to strip it and replace everything? I'd be selling:
- Ultegra brakes (front and rear)
- 105 groupo
- Bars
- Stem
- Saddle
- Wheels
so reckon I could make a reasonable chunk of the £2k back...

Anybody else done this?

Obviously it depends on the spec, but I doubt very much that it'll be cheaper than just buying the frameset.

You won't make £600 out of that lot, especially given new 105 coming in July.

Frame is the Giant Propel.

Didn't realise 105 retailed for under £400 so would probably only just make it back and therefore probably not worth the hassle.

Full 105 groupset is under £300 now, wheels about £80 and supplied with 12 months warranty. No point in buying to strip and sell

Looks like a hell of a group to me, and would also mean that new-take off groups like yours would be probably valued around £200.

I think it works the other way around.

Buying the wrong size bike just to rob the groupset off it, and selling the frame on. You can often find a bargain bike in the dark corners of ebay, especially if the 'name on the frame' is one of the less popular brands, or an 'unknown in Britain' type affair. Groupsets, on the other hand are easy to identify, and if you can get the 'wrong' bike with the right groupset, for less than the cost of a new groupset, it can be well worthwhile.

My crashed bike has a damaged frame, but the components seem in good shape, so I'll buy a complete new bike with a quality frame, but with lower end groupset. My complete Ultegra group will then replace the Tiagra/105 on the new steed, with that kit getting swapped onto my steel framed bike for winter/wet rides. The broken frame will then, reluctantly, be consigned to a skip
