The date stamped on bottles of engine oil.....

There are dates stamped on bottles of engine oil, which are not past (and thus not dates of manufacture) but are well before the 2 years stated in the service book.....so what's it for? Or is it a case of I've got a bottle of engine oil which was made ages ago and is due to expire?
