Having this horrible creak every time I shift into 2nd or 4th (taking a lot of muscle to slam the stock in too) hoping it's just the gear knob slightly broken. But no chance to have a good look. Any ideas if something major wrong? Or could it be the link bushes?

Sounds like it could be the remote shift housing bushes... usually shows up in 2nd and 4th as when you pull the lever back it moves the housing down until it hits the propshaft, hence the noise...

Cheers Ian. A much discussed topic but is the consensus that it's easy enough to do from the inside of the car?

Only if you have Hands Like A Peadophile(tm) biggrin
Otherwise you're better off doing it from underneath (and even then it's cosy).

Maybe I'll call uncle Jimmy to come and fix it then...
