Bit of a strange question, but does anyone know how to work out fuel density?

I've been having a chat with a work colleague and we we're trying to work out if there's a correlation between octane rating and density?

Is there a way of calculating the density as the octane rating changes from say 95 for 'normal' unleaded as to say 99 for Tesco Super unleaded. Or is there no correlation at all between the two?

Place a container on weighing scales.

Zero Scales.

Pour in exactly 1lt of fuel.

Take reading.

Density = Weigh a litre of it.

Octane = Have a CFR engine or Some other calibrated measuring device.

And No.

We've got the following figures if that helps:

Unleaded Super - 737.5 kg/m3

Unleaded premium - 730.3 kg/m3

Which of the above fuels would be your 'normal' unleaded, and which one would be your higher grade, such as V-power for instance?

So what would make the difference within the fuel to make a difference in the density between the two fuels?

Different chemical composition. The exact chemical composition of the additives used in fuels is probably not in the public domain.

I'm quite surprised they differ that much, though.

Won't be additives, they are in there at too low a treat to make a significant difference to density.

The difference you see are due to different base fuel and possibly the bio derived material. (Ethanol or funky stuff).

I don't think the two are related

LPG has a very high octane rating and it is a gas at room temperature and pressure
