Hi all,

So- need a second car. Have got a 80 mile a day (mostly motorway) commute.

Would like something that is relatively economical (60 plus MPG) which means diesel. Ideally something that is ok comfort wise and cheap to run.

Maximum budget is 5k (absolute max).

Options considered so far: Seat Ibiza 1.4 ecomotive (08 onwards just in budget), Polo Bluemotion (old shape), Fiesta Econetic, Audi A2.

None of them excite me whatsoever- hence the post. Is there anything left field that I've missed?

Thanks

Tim

Fabia VRS? Not sure on the MPG figure though. Quick Google suggests 50+ so maybe not quite good enough... But it would be alright to use at weekends if needs must.

Seat Ibiza old shape FR or Sport TDI - 130hp 1.9 diesel. This was the lightest car this engine wsas fitted to and should manage at least 55mpg on a run and likely over 60mpg if taking it easy. Very high gearing in the 6-speed 'box so 75mph = 2000rpm IIRC.

Engine easily remappable to around 170hp for more relaxed cruising (more torque) without really losing any economy provided you're not using the extra power.

Also got some grunt when you want to enjoy yourself.

There's also the Cupra TDI with 160hp but I don't think it would get near 60mpg.

Don't expect a particularly smooth or comfy ride though...

Had been thinking about the 130 engine in either seat or skoda form (I think its the same engine in the vrs as the ibiza sport)

I think the insights looks are a little bit too much for me. The old one looks epic for MPG but the looks are a little funky....

Good suggestions so far.

Wondering what the real MPG is like on an A2....

Peugeot 207 gt hdi. Top spec, comfortable, well in budget and I used to get 46 mpg doing relatively short journeys and stomping on the accelerator.
