Hope someone can solve an ongoing issue I have. If I plug my laptop into my router, I can ping any web address I care to try and get a response, however, if I try to browse to any site, no response.

It works fine at work on the compnay network. I have done all the usual proxy settings to no avail.

When I rebuilt the laptop last year, it connected fine, it seems to be after I login to the company network. I think the group policy has nobled it in some way?

Hope someone can help...

Mr C_G here:

Sounds like your DNS setting is incorrect, you could do with checking the IP address of your ISP's DNS server.

Could be a bit of problem for you if you can't get on the site.

have you checked the obvious in IE:

Tools -> Options -> Connections -> Lan Settings -> Auto Detect Settings?

Generally speaking ticking that makes it work for me

Checked all the above - all correspond to my home PC settings, proxy, DNS, WINS, etc. No difference at all!

Interestingly, I can ping our VPN connection, but the Cisco client fails to find it - this is outside IE?

Er, if ping can resolve host names then it isn't that.

Browser settings? Try using firefox portable (no installation needed) to check there is nothing strange in your browser (proxy settings etc).

Telnet to the web server using telnet <address> 80, once connected you'll have a blank screen, hit any old key and enter and you should get back an http error message - this proves you can connect to the correct port on the web server.

eg telnet www.pistonheads.com 80

Hmmm... tried Firefox, same problem.

The telnet command gives: 'Could not open a connection to host on port 80 : Connect failed'

Is this the problem?

Network connectivity over port 80 isn't working.

What ip address does www.pistonheads.com resolve to for you when using ping?

I'll have to try again tonight. I'm sure its the company group policy causing this!

Perhaps your company have a proxy server you need to use or have blocked browsing on port 80 with the firewall?

If you are pinging the URL then DNS is fine, if however, you are pinging the IP address only then your problem is DNS.

You say port 80 doesn't work ? This means that your company have a VPN using another port (81?)

Best bet is to go back to your company and check all of your settings.

Did you say you are using A cisco VPN client ? Is this connecting OK ? It may be an issue with the VPN concentrator ....

I can ping web addresses so DNS is not an issue. VPN is not required (I'm trying to use it at home for general browsing) but we do have a VPN I can connect to, or rather cannot as the Cisco client fails to connect. As mentioned above, it all worked fine when I rebuilt the laptop before I connected it to the company LAN and joined it to the domain.

OK - so the laptop was rebuilt, you have a VPN client which doesn't work right now....

Seperately you are trying to connect to the internet from home via whatever ISP you use ?

Sounds like the Cisco software has done something to your IE settings.... do you have an IT dept at work ?

Could also be gateway settings, DNS might work if he is using a local Nameserver.

http://80.253.108.4

what does that return.

if its windows, ipconfig /all

paste results.

telnet 80.253.108.12 110

what does that return.

tracert 80.253.108.12

what does that return.

Enjoy

agreed.

basically it seems to me that when you rebuilt your pc, a setting has been lost or something of that ilk. So Jamie is correct, you may be using the wrong gateway, or maybe you need something as simple as a static route on your box, or maybe there is something within the VPN client that needs to be switched on...

Try putting down exactly what the setup is, and exactly what you can and can't do. I still think you need to talk to your IT people who administer your Cisco client though ....

For various reasons I have rebuilt the laptop with W2K and it all works fine now - just won't connect it to the company domain anymore!!!

Thanks for all the advice...
