I think it creates a new folder within My Documents although its been a few years since ive used Windows with msn

You need to go to tools then options, at the bottom switch on recording and it tells you the folder.

should be a folder called "Chat Logs" somewhere, usually in 'my documents'

My documents -> My received files -> folder in there, i think

You have to switch the option on.
If you the right click on each person and go to VIEW MESSAGE HISTORY its all there.

On the latest version, each contact has an associated .xml file containing the conversations. Default location is in my documents.

Googles desktop search will allow you to search old conversations.

They are just too clever for my liking.
