VAG - 1.6 TDI vs 1.2 TDI

Hi,

I'm thinking about buying the wife a new VAG engined diesel (either Seat Ibiza or Skoda Fabia but that's not too relevant)and would appreciate any feedback on the 1.2 TDi vs the1.6 TDi (both 75PS) such as MPG, refinement, gearing, etc.

It wouldn't be the ultra Eco variants so it wouldn't have the ultra long gearing.

It will be used for a 50 mile daily commute, all cross country on A and B roads, hardly ever on the motorway.

we tested the 1.6 and the 1.2 against the 1.2tsi in the ibiza, across the same sort of commute, we found the derv was still a bit sluggish but perfectly adequate for the job, we settled for the petrol 1.2tsi instead because it was much nicer to drive and quieter inside, and cheaper ( paid £10300 for a ibiza FR 5 door brand new) plus im sure you will get the usual scaremongering from the derv haters on here.

on average we are getting 48mpg out of the petrol across a 13 mile trip of a roads and country lanes.

i have the 1.6tdi in my works golf, it pulls a car of that size along okay, although mines limited to 70mph so i cant comment on it about that.

I have the 1.6tdi 105bhp in an A1, similar cross country commute of 70 miles a day, averages 60mpg. Any reason you're not looking at the 105bhp version that both the Fabia and Ibiza have? It's quite a bit more nippy than the 1.2Tdi polo courtesy car's I've had.

Because I'm a cheapskate as
A) it s the wife's car who drives slow and wouldn't benefit for a more powerful engine
B) looking at entry level models that only come with lower powered engines.

I have a very clear and rational reason for saving money on this car.

It means I can spend more every month on my TVR.
