Engine in front of rear wheels ?

I've always through that flat-6 Porsches came with the engine hanging behind the rear wheels.
Just saw a picture of the 2nd gen Boxster and the flat-6 engine is hanging in front of the rear wheels,
when did they change ?

Boxster = mid engined (and no room for back seats)
911 = rear engined (and a little room for back seats)
