Shed money estate. Advice needed.
Discussion
I'm after buying a cheap estate car as a stop gap while i restore my W124 merc. I don't do many miles, 5k a year. I need an estate to chuck all my guitar gear in and well, i just like estates. Would love some suggestions from PHers. Max budget is 1k. Ive been looking at high mile e46 touring and also mondeos but im open to anything.
At less than a grand, my priorities would be:
Filter by 'estate'!
Petrol - you are doing low miles.
Manual - probably less to go wrong / easier to fix.
Locality - no point spending a couple of hundred £££ driving / training around the country (plus I'm quite lazy / value my weekend time)
Condition - chatting with the seller, what feel do I get for the car and it's current home. I'd be looking for strong mechanical upkeep, an owner who roughly knows the car and live with tatty cosmetics.
Service history - I wouldn't be expecting much, so anything good here is a bonus.
Manufacturer - use the above to get a shortlist and pop back on here to discuss Mondeo / Avensis / Passat etc v whatever else you found.

97-00 Volvo V70. Tough as old boots and nice to drive as well. Far better bet at shed money than the newer 2000-on model.
If you look hard enough you'll find 1 owner, full Volvo history cars about - they attract those sort of owners.
