Sometimes I turn my ignition and just get a clunk

It dosent happen all the time but sometimes I try to start up and I just get a clunk. Then I have to turn the ignition switch off and then back on sometimes it takes 3 or 4 times. Anyone got any ideas?

Have you checked your 100 amp fuse? It could be on it's way out.

...sometimes accompanied by a burning smell if one of the bolts have come loose & set fire to the plastic cover!!

Sounds like time for the Mod-Wise solenoid upgrade wiring kit, or possibly a new starter motor.

Starter motor and solenoid replaced 11/03 should still be ok, just a year old!

Check the Positive cable is tight on the solenoid, mine had worked loose & i was getting the same symptoms...

Have cleaned up my fuses/connections and seems much better.
Couldn't find a 100 amp fuse, is this situated somewhere else other than the fuse box in the nearside footwell.

I had one big fuse on its own in a black container in the passenger footwell.

Was it the solenoid connection you checked?

& The 100 amp fuse is usually strapped along the main chassis rail next to the engine just infront of the starter motor... for your info

I wouldn't bank on it. I once went through my Chimaera's starter motor in a year -- doing a lot of city driving and generating high under-bonnet temperatures didn't help.

The fuse underneath the car is the alternator fuse, it would stop the battery charging. The fuse in the footwell(if fitted) is the main fuse from the battery to the fuse box. My starter seemed to have died after a year, fitting the Range Rover relay back in the wiring cured it. Some have had a new starter fitted to cure the hot start, only to drive down the road for the "fault" to reappear, again a relay sorted them. Maybe any one who has done the £4 mod, would care to confirm !
