The turbo will obviously cost more to run, but that would be my choice.
Do the sums and take some test drives.

Go out and drive them all and then come back and tell us !

Forums will only produce the same old crap .... people reinforcing eachother and going to whatever lengths necessary to justify their own purchases.

buy what you want, not what you think will depreciate least.

Had this exact dilemma when choosing which car to buy last year - driving all of them is key.

In the end I went for a nice manual Gen 1 997 C2S - It really does offer pretty much everything the other cars do at a price that will leave you with investment money to put to work to pay for the expenses!

All will cost you quite a lot of money in depreciation and running costs.

So I agree with other posters: organise a back to back test of all the cars, as much as possible on the same day. Enjoy the experience of driving them all. And make your mind up. Try not to be overly blown away with the straight line grunt of the turbo and remember the thrill of that straight line speed often fades. It can be tricky to remember this if you only have a short time in each car. These cars are all quite different to each other, surprisingly so. Come prepared with a list of things that you want to assess about the cars and see how they each do against your criteria.

I while ago I did back to back tests - all same day - in GT3, turbo and Ferrari, then placed my order. It was great fun.

As for your choice, of those three if it were me I would choose a 991 and take a bath on resale / depreciation. But still... your earn it, so you can spend it on things you appreciate, right? 997 GTS as runner up. But that it is personal choice. All are great cars in their own ways.

Simon.

it's clear you want a turbo, so just buy the turbo.

buy anything else and every time you see a turbo you will not even like your own car and wish you had the turbo.

Thing is, its mainly heart. The head can help with man maths and some sort of logic, but if you used just your head, you would buy a 1 year old focus diesel.

Nobody needs a sports car, its a pure luxury item.

I have always said the my 993 is not a car, its a toy. Its only use is purely pleasure.

Had similar dilema. We specced 997 Gen2 or 997T Gen 1. Drove both back to back, but not sure it really helped but highlighted differences.

Went for 997T in the end (heart decision, I needed to scratch the itch). 3 months on and not sure it was right decision. Great car, great straight line speed, but all over very quickly and not sure its that all round 'great' driving experience. I miss things about my 996.2 C2. People ask why I'm underwhelmed and its hard to explain why, but the words 'cold and 'sterile' are probably the ones.

I'm curious, why exactly do you visit these forums? In case you hadn't realised, he asked for some help, which means he wants some reinforcement and would appreciate help to justify his purchase to himself and quite possibly her indoors...

I agree. yes

I have owned all three, and for the 'best' 911 true driving experience, its definitely the GTS.

Not as quick as the Turbo in a straight line, but in the real world of typical UK A and B roads the GTS runs close and is far more involving to drive than the T ( emotional nuclear detachment!) and also the 991 Carrera which in most peoples books is let down by its inert electrical steering (also by its poor gearbox in 'manuel' form at least).

Whilst the 991 Carrera S is very capable, it is regarded as more sports GT than sports car, whereas the GTS is widely regarded as the perfect mix with its beautifully balaced neutral hydraulic steering (especialy in 2 w d), slightly tweaked suspension, wider C4S body and standard sports exhaust which sound great. The 408 bhp 'powerkit' engine is a delight and benefits from a much flatter torque curve than the standard Carrera.

Downsides of the GTS....not many...although some dont like the spyder centre locks I have never had a problem and consider they are an essential part of the cars spec (£2300 extra on 997 Turbo btw).

I would liken the Mclaren 12c is to the F458 as the Turbo is to the GTS.

The GTS would also win residually....prices for good spec and mileage cars have changed little in the past two years helped by restricted numbers available whereas in contrast the Turbo has always been a hefty depreciator and next years Gen 2 991 will inevitably have an adverse affect on 991 Carrera prices.....thumbup
