Not many people will have the old style manifold to Y piece solution but I've got a quick question. This is the earlier design that uses a gasket between the two and 8 bolts to hold the Y piece and manifold together, seen on pre-cat Griffiths.

How flat do the mating surfaces have to be for re-gasketing? They are pretty pitted to be honest and after a while removing most of the old gasket and block sanding they are pretty flat and smooth to the touch, but not entirely.

Is it worth using some high temperature liquid gasket along with the standard http://www.acs-pro.de/resources/Wedge/S0099.jpg ? I'm guessing the temperatures would be too high.

Answers on a postcard please!

Not long done a set of these on an early chim,

I just took a grinder to the faces to remove the worst of the baked on gasket and pitted surface finished with some wet n dry, the fibre gaskets sealed no problem.

Just make sure you tighten the bolts equally i.e 12 o'clock then 6 o'clock rather than 1,2,3,4 if that makes sense.

if its bad you could always use this instead of a gasket, or maybe a bit of it alongside, I've had good results in the past.
