Bit of a strange one this , I am trying to get my heater to blow something like hot air so I checked under the bonnet to see how the hoses are run.
The heater hose runs from the top of the water pump to the matrix then the return from the matrix goes to the side of the carb for the auto choke then out and down to the base of the inlet manifold and stops there without apparently completing the circuit or does it go through the manifold and back into the head ? , am I missing something here cos I am sure it should return back to the bottom hose area at some point!
The thermostat was stuck open so whilst changing that and renewing the anti-freeze I thought I would check the system is set up correctly.

Both the crossflow and OHC engines have the upper hose of the heater matrix running to the outlet on the water pump and the lower hose from the matrix as you say going to the inlet manifold or if auto choke to the choke then to the manifold. It then goes through the manifold and into the head then completes its circuit inside the engine.
If there is no heat in the hoses (with the engine up to running temperature) or the rubber hoses are hot but with the fan running on the heater there is no heat output then suspect that the matrix is restricted or blocked.
Usually if the matrix is blocked you may find one hose is hot and the other is cold or not as hot as the other.
Another problem can be air locks in the matrix.
I hope that helps you out.
always had hassles with airlocks too - a t piece in the highest hose works well to fill the heater letting air out ive used various things gas pipe tee's and there were proper ones fitted to some mk3 cortinas also connecting a hose to the lower heater matrix pipe can sometimes blow some crud out [another pipe to direct water out the top pipe and then away from electrics etc]but in my experience the older the matrix the worse it is.
Had some success this afternoon , flushed the heater pipes out in both directions till all the rusty crud had gone , with new stat in temperature gauge is sat 1/3 way up now and we have a luke warm heater which is progress but only from one vent so need to have a crawl about under the dash but still think the matrix will prove to be u/s .
Hopefully over the weekend I will finally finish the garage roof raising and extension exercise so the Geep can come in from the cold then I can get on with the list of jobs , centre console/radio , fitting rear seats etc.
The tax expires tonight so if we dont have too many nice dry hood-free days I can focus on getting them all done for the 1st Jan , there again I can see me stood in the post office queue tomorrow.......!
