With a baby on the way i decided it was time to get rid of the 135i coupe and go for something a bit bigger and with 4 door's, ended up leaving a deposit of this after a test drive.

Curious to see what it's like day-to-day smile

A very unusual choice smile

I ran a 320i xDrive for a couple of weeks and never really got on with the engine but I'm sure in the higher state of tune it'll be a lot better. The rest of the car was great though, except the steering lock which was cataclysmicly terrible, but I believe that is the 4x4 that does it and the RWD ones are better.

I live in hope laugh

I've had my eye on one of these for a while but was hoping to buy nearly new but they seem to be rare as hens teeth. I wondered if it might be a bit tail happy?which I'd like but the Mrs drives the car too so perhaps the S4 might be safer for her. Will be interested to hear your thoughts and look forward to reading your report

These will not be tail happy at all, the electronic systems come in very early and keep everything under control. I have an E92 330i (circa 270bhp) and with the ESP and TC on it is near impossible to get into a bad situation even driving v. quickly in the wet.

Nice.
If it's any help, I have that same engine in my E89 Z4 and it really is a great engine to use on a day to day basis. It pulls from about 1250rpm all the way to the redline.

It's pretty frugal as well. I'm seeing 35-38mpg on an average blast. If you drive sensibly, you can get 40mpg+ on the motorway without any real problems.

The only real problem is that it sounds a bit "tappety" but that's just the injectors and it seems to quieten down once it's warm.

And, only £180 a year to tax.

Really like this engine, especially in the Z4, but it's so bloody rare, there's currently only one sDrive28i manual for sale on autotrader

I know - I think last time I checked there were only about 128 Z4's in the UK with this engine in it.

I'm not sure why nobody goes for for the 28i engine though. Everyone seems to opt for the 20i even though mpg/RFL are exactly the same for both engines. Odd really.

Eco warriors have persuaded everyone that powerful and/or large engines are the devil. Mazda has a policy of not telling customers the engine size of the petrol 3 (2.0) because it puts people off; they just mention bhp (modest) and mpg (good).

Very nice and it makes a very pleasant change from the default 320d.

It really is nice to see! There aren't many of us petrol owning 3 series drivers around!

Sure you'll love it!
