Well, my cars on-board computer says, based on my driving, it will need an oil change in approximately 10-11k miles time, and it's already done 9k miles on the current oil. It uses fully synthetic 0W-30 oil (Castrol Edge)
So....if you guys think that 19-20k miles is too many, how many would you do, and why? You hear of those saying to "check the condition" of the oil on the dipstick....I'm guessing you mean colour; at what point do you decide that it needs doing?

I've never been a fan of extended intervals - though I use a diesel most of the time. I'd never let a diesel car go more than 7K or a petrol 10K before changing the oil.
My current daily is a 2008 Golf Bluemotion and has 117K miles on the clock (I've only done about 5K in nearly two years and changed the oil after a year even though the car didn't tell me to do so). I was about to give it a second change in January when the engine packed up. There were three oil changes before I bought it (it had an exceptionally full service history as it was a lease car and the history includes wiper blades and a headlamp bulb!), so I would guess it had oil changed every 25K miles - on variable service.
It has cost me £3500 or so to get the engine sorted (the alternative was to write the car off and lose £1500 or so in value as there were no cheap - or used - engines about). It will get the oil changed at least once a year (the maximum time interval), though, if I get back to doing high mileages (I did 16K or more a year with a Passat), I will change it every 7K (at the most).
And yes, I use quality oil in the car - Castrol Edge at the moment, though I have used Quantum (bought from a VW garage) for many years. People say oil is expensive but I know for sure that the engine cost a lot more - especially as it was off the road for three weeks.

As an aside IMHO oil is discussed so much on forums because it's something most DIY-er can change himself and therefore the DIY-er has an opinion, ill-informed or otherwise.
For me, it's every 6 months which is about 8k miles. Oil and filter costs £30 and takes 30 mins. That feels like a proportion response based on the manufactures recommendation, but not based on any tribology tests of my oil.

But WHY are you not a fan? Because of the experience you've had with the Golf? I know someone with a BMW E39 530 touring which has had oil changes roughly every 20k miles and has gone over 600k miles on the original engine.Where did you get the 10k figure from?
Please don't take this to be an offensive post, I'm just curious as to see the reasoning.....largely because I'm contemplating getting my oil changed sooner than the computer claims (as it's due a coolant service soon).

I think part of this concern is that most onboard computers are completely ignorant of the TIME between oil changes. Eg. you could leave the car sat for two years and the OBC might still say you're 11,000m away from a service - but the oil will have fallen to bits before then.

I believe they just make an educated guess, on the conservative side.
