Hi all,

Short time forum lurker, first time poster here.

I'm fast coming up on the big 3 0 this summer and what with all my hair migrating to my lower back I thought it was high time I had a mid-life crisis.

Think it's time for my first admission onto the roller coaster ride that is TVR ownership.

I have read a few posts on this forum regarding "Trigger's Broom" and it's owner in the classifieds, and thought it could be worth looking at.

Current progress:

  • Financing the purchase - check
  • Independent expert's report (I'm far from a car expert) - check (middle of this week)
To date I have decided to bury my head in the sand re: insurance, but thought I'd bite the bullet this morning and have a look.

My my.

I have been quoted some absolutely hilarious figures (>£5k in one case, though admittedly only online quotes)so far, and thus my question:

Do you expect it to make all that much difference to insurance premiums if I wait until the day of my 30th to insure?

Also as a guideline, would some of you chaps volunteer what sorts of excess you have on your premiums?

Many thanks!
Taz

Hmmmm that does sound high. It will of course depend on your history, location etc. I would try a specialist insurer like Mannings,MSM, Hagerty etc.

Last year I hit 5 0 so don't rub it in! However, I noticed my quotes plummeting earlier on in the year so I believe that a soon as an insurance calculation algorithm starts, it sees your year of birth, not actual age. That said, there have been real drops in premiums due to non-discrimination between men / women and FINALLY doing something about the scams.

Because I was born in 1963, my insurance quotes were substantially lower from Jan 2013 onwards. That said, there is probably a bigger drop between 29 and 30 so run the online quotes again moving your d-o-b to March 1984 and see if there is a big difference. Until you actually purchase, you can put what you like. I often add / take away off road parking , SDP or commuting use, previous accidents (whistle) etc and run it again.

Edit: That bit above sounds dodgy. When I use meerkat, confused etc, they want to know claims history of course but when you bury down to a an actual company, their policies differ, i.e. some want to know the last 3 years, some 4, and some 5! It's a pain rerunning with different information but worth it if you have the time.

when i hit 30, Insurance on my then Chimaera was less than £300 PA, SDP garaged and with a 5k milage and no no claims (used on daily drive).

in the many years of ownership i used, mannings, RHClassics, Classic line and another i cannot remeber.

At 35, just getting quotes for newly acquired tuscan and on 5k im looking at £300 odd. online compare place was over £850.....

its takes a bit of time phoning around but will save you 100's

What?!

I was 28 when I first got my Chimaera, I pay £380ish with Mannings Insurance. That's garaged as a second car.

I have my Chim 400 on a "personal fleet" policy with an Audi A6 and an old Land Rover. All insured for business use (not just SDP) for 40k miles a year, all on driveway parking (no garage) and 35 years old with 3 points, a non fault claim last year(several thousand £££) and a non-recovered stolen BMW 320d Coupe last September.

Approx £1300 for the year with £250 excess.

Hi Taz

I thought it would be a good idea to give you the following link:

http://www.pistonheads.com/GASSING/topic.asp?h=0&a...

I am in the process of getting the Giff insured and have used this list before as a good starting point.

Hopefully we'll get to meet on Sunday.

Look forward to seeing you.

63 years old....3000 miles a year....£250 excess...Mannings insurers....£440 pounds a year....Only problem is you don't build up a no claims bonus with these type of insurances.

As above, you really need to do it the old fashioned way and call the specialists. The threat above is a very good start. Im 33 and pay 270 ish, online quotes were more than double. Hitting 30 didn't make much difference at all.

Can recommend both Mannings and Classicline. Both cover track days too. Limited mileage policy should be quite cheap.
Just google. Though Classicline is 01455 639000. Mine is insured with Equity Red Star through Classicline.

I actually insured mine with Direct line in the end last Nov. With 9 yrs NCB, it was £285, only £40 more p.a. than a 2.0 litre Vauxhall Omega.

However, when the policy arrived, I noticed the excess had been doubled from £250 to £500. No minor claims wanted (!), and there's a £75 excess for a windscreen.

I have a multicar policy with them, my everyday car is a little Suzuki diesel and that was under £300 with another 1 yrs NCB I earned on a separate policy last year. Don't use it every day, don't want to risk the NCB!

As above, specialist insurance + it can help to join the TVRCC and get discounts that way.

I have had my Griff since I was 27 am am insured with Mannings it was £800 limited to 5k mileage then iirc but that was with agreed value and track day cover which does push the price up a bit. My 10 years NCB is on my daily but Mannings mirror the discount to my TVR policy as NCB can only exist one policy. Mannings did say that I could get the cost down to around £300-400 if the car was garaged as it could go onto a classic policy, unfortunately I do not have a garage.

I went from a S2000 to a Griff and my insurance went down which I found a bit strange.

I'm really happy with BE WISER Insurance.

At the time of going through this minefield they were £300-£400 cheaper than all my other quotes(And I tried many)

Starting with 0 NCB Age then 48, £250 Voluntary excess, postal address cat B,Value of car £11,000 no business use,6k limited mileage and garaged.

Comes with RAC cover, courtesy car and they send you a voucher on your birthday £1 X your age.

Just received a voucher for £49 although this can only be put towards a new policy (house additional car) or 50% can be used off your current car on renewal.

I received a Happy Birthday phone call from them(Nice touch) and was asked if they can help in anyway. I told them that I'm pretty close to my 6k mileage limit and still have another 2 months before renewal. I asked if they could increase my mileage to 7K and they said would call back, sure enough 20 mins call back and gave me the extra 1k NO CHARGE...

I paid as said with Zero NCB £350 and with the £25 B'day gift coming off my man maths tells me I actually paid £325. All my other quotes were hitting the £640-£750

Very pleased with them...

I'm 'that age' too and that sounds a good deal. How old is your Chimaera? Mine is a 2000 model and some firms insist on a car being 15 y.o. for classic cover.

Go with a specialists. I got a quote in excess of £3000 this year for my modified Griff. At 32. frown I paid £1500 parked on the street in Newcastle for my S Series when I was 21. I think I paid about £700 when I was 23 and bought the Griff. Actually paid £290-ish this year. They even held my NCB too!
