Insurance write off madness!

Afternoon all,

Does anyone else think that the insurance companies have lost the plot a bit with the minor damage that they seem to write cars off for nowadays?

A Ford Fiesta came my way which only needed a new drivers door and mirror. This was considered a CAT D!

Is this just proving we have become such a throwaway culture?

In short, yes it does prove that. We're taxed in the name of environmental concerns, yet we scrap things which are energy intensive to replace for superficial damage.

Unfortunately it's not always just damage, hire car costs etc makes claims easier and cheaper just to 'write off' the vehicle.

Isn't this the kind of thing that is making insurance premiums creep up every year ?

I bought a Porsche 944 not so long ago. A cat c salvage. Pre damage it was absolutely spotless, I bought it for peanuts from a salvage yard.

I'm not kidding, all it needed to get it back on the road was a small plastic repair to the front bumper, the header on the radiator re - securing. (I bodged it with araldite as it was cracked with the intention of putting a new rad in - never needed to) also a new undertray and coolant flush.

That was it.

I spoke to the previous owner who confirmed it had always been serviced by Porsche (76k), the damage was caused by running over a tyre on an A road which caused the damage.....

I will always have a good look at a 'cat c or d' car but certainly won't be put off....

I dunno, I hit something so hard in my car yesterday I hope it's a Cat B, but it probably won't be and some bodge artist will knock it back into shape and punt it on.

If they used second hand parts and didn't provide hire cars etc people would still be complaining.

Cat D says that the damage was less than the value of the vehicle. But, overall, they've decided that to write it off makes the total payout less - so, presumably, hire car costs etc.
