Hi
I wonder has any one any advice on this problem. I have a 9 year old 2.7 diesel s type, I have owned from new and the car is serviced every year. driving the other night the car appeared to go of two or three cylinders then grind to a halt. I tried to restart it but there was a severe clattering sound. a local mechanic thinks the camshaft may be broken, is this possible for a car with a genuine 80,000 miles.
any help would be much appreciated.
thanks.

Sadly it doesn't sound too promising. There was a story on here where a big end bearing turned and caused engine failure in an XJ Tdi. No idea if that's the same issue with yours but it needs proper investigation.

Thanks Guys
Yip big end bearing seems to be the problem.
not sure what to do next, as there is no point in fitting another 2.7d engine.
just parking it up for now.

Why is there no point in fitting another 2.7 engine?

Has the car mostly been used for short journeys? Is it a 2005> with straight tailpipes and therefore diesel particulate filters?

Sadly this engine seems to have serious longevity issues. You see very few around with more than 150k on the clock.
