We will be building an extension shortly and will need to add 2 new TV's when it's finished. We have Virgin cable but I am not keen on adding more boxes (we already have 2) and cost to watch TV. There won't be any option to connect to a roof Ariel for Freeview either. We have broadband and it runs pretty fast so is there some web based service or clever wireless box I can buy to work with a modern smart tv to give us a freeview level of viewing with the option to subscribe to more channels if required?

TV catchup is pretty good, I don't think you can upgrade it but it has freeview channels and is web based.

Thanks but want to watch broadcast live TV, not play back movies or TV series.

Tv Catchup, despite it's nomenclature, is live tv. Picture quality on a larger screen is not great.

Eybic, that's a good call, I have used that on my iPad now and again. I guess I would need something hooked up to my TV to use it though. Do modern smart TV's allow general web browsing to take advantage of these kinds of services?

I guess the other option is to try and take a signal from an existing Virgin V plus box located not too far away from one of the new TV's but would like to do this wirelessly is that possible?

If you're building an extension why can't you cable for aerial, sat, cable TV , ethernet etc.?

We don't have a roof aerial and as indicated don't want to start another contract with Virgin and pay another £20 a month for a couple more boxes.
The router is located a long way from the extension and for various reasons re locating it would not be straightforward.

How far are the cable boxes from the new TV locations? I assume they have a spare HDMI or coax output?

One of the boxes is within 2 meters the other much further away. No HDMI out on both, coax on one. They both have Ethernet in.

I would really consider getting as many cables in as you can, put an aerial up on the roof, you will regret not doing it.

Am I missing something here? In Ireland we regularly put aerials in the loft and they pick up the 'new' DTV just fine.

If not, as said by megaphone, just run cables through, lots of them (CAT5 & Coax), bring them all back to a central point in the loft or under the stairs etc.

It's not rocket science.
