Ok so I have left it for a month or so but with a freshly charged battery and a can of petrol I thought I would get it going, but no, turned and turned almost caught once when I poured a little fuel into the carbs , but that was it. Weirdly there is no fuel in the filter so the vacumn pump may be shot which would explain it cutting out before I laid it up. Frustrating but hey I have been a bad owner.

So...does anyone ( and zig I am pointing this at you as we are both se Londoners ) know a mobile mechanic who could assist in getting this going.

Thanks guys

The mechanical pump on a Pinto can take a long time to prime and fill the carbs if the car is rested for a while. Can you safely rig up a temporary fuel supply to the carbs? Also check filters and tank for blockages.

Pretty sure it is the fuel pump as there was nothing in the fuel filter even after a good bit of cranking. I did try and briefly rig up a bottle of fuel and put the inlet tube into that , however it did not work as I forgot about gravity , I then gave up and went inside to watch game of thrones instead.

Am actually ashamed to ask this , but is the little pinto engine hiding under the bonnet a DOHC or SOHC ?

Daryl

If its a mechanical fuel pump, then take it out and actuate it by hand, if you stick your lip (or finger if you dont like the taste of petrol,, I do) over the pipes, one of them should pull on your lip!

If that is working then it could be that the carb float is stuck in the closed position, therefore not allowing the pump to suck up fuel, so either strip down the top of the carb and make sure the float is free, or give it a technical 'tap' on the top to release it (I would go for the 'tap' firstly)

Make sure the battery is full, as has been said before it could take some time to pull the fuel up.

Oh, last thing, make sure tere is fuel in the tanks, Im not ashamed to admit Ive been frustrated and confused for days with the Taimar trying to start it with no petrol in the tanks... Dummy! (me, not you)
