Broadband expert needed
Discussion
A couple of months ago I bought a new Laptop and Wireless Router, it transpired that both were faulty which made diagnosing my Broadband problems nigh on impossible. I now only have one problem so it should be easier – not.
Up until a month ago my Broadband connection died at 1.00am every single morning without fail, the clocks have since changed and it now happens at Midnight every day. Once kicked off I can reconnect straight away and it will stay connected until the next Midnight. That is the problem and nothing else, rest of the day everything is perfect.
The setup up I have is a Wireless Router connected to my desktop PC via an Ethernet cable and to the laptop via wireless link. The following may help pin point the problem:
The Laptop has been replaced (first one had bad screen).
The Desktop has been wiped clean (in case it was a virus?).
All phones have been unplugged and master socket used.
The Wireless Router was replaced (supplied not working properly, very little range, so this is a second one. Marked original, this is another brand new one, range excellent).
There are no power surges in the house, nothing on a timeswitch etc.
Now the killer – if I replace the router with a ADSL modem it does not happen.
BT, AOL, Sony, Netgear have all given up. To recap the problem has happened with 2 Laptops, 2 Routers and before and after the Desktop was re-formatted. The exchange is at the top of my road and my Broadband connection is as good as it gets.
Any suggestions?

Just to confirm are you saying that without changing anything on the laptop and simply disconnecting the router and connecting the modem instead, the problem dissapears?
I remove the Router, I plug the USB modem into the desktop PC - there is no longer a problem at Midnight. Obviously the Laptop is then out of the game.

Might be something your broadband provider is doing on their end. Something being reset for the next working day or a automated task which upsets your router?.
Sounds to me like the problem is on the other end but affecting your router.
My ISP is AOL, there is only one router they will support and it is the one I have. I have worked my way up to one below God in AOL tech support (God was busy) they have looked into it and said no way. This is supported by the theory that if the problem was at their end they would have heard about it by now. They have supported this router for nearly two years. I would agree with that.

No expert here, but could it be to do with some sort of handshake? I know I can set my router for hours/half day/full day type thing.
not at home today so can't check the setting I'm afraid.
Not much of a techie but would you have a handshake when already connected? I thought that might happen when connecting, don't know is the short answer.

Does the router loose the connection if no PC's are on?
Like someone above asked, which Netgear one is it?
Not sure how to check that, what i did is sit there watching the lights on it at Midnight, no change. Router is Netgear DG834Gv2 (did firmware upgrade just in case, no different)

If you connect to the routers web interface at the bottom of the router status page there's a connection status page ( I think ) that tells you the various up-times.

Yes, got it, will check it a while after midnight, see what it says and report back. Sounds interesting, nobody has ever suggested doing that before

I notice that you said you are on AOL. You tried the message boards at AOL Keyword: Broadband. There is one there called Technical Hints and Tips. Post the problem there and see what response you get.
Many experts on AOL and Broadband there, although I have not seen your particular problem posted.
If my understanding of the prolem is right then it only affects the router. This would suggest its not at the ISP end, and amyway my router doesn't kick me off at that time. My guess is that it is something that is interupting the wireless signal on the router. You don't have any security lights that go off at that time do you? Maybe a burglar alarm that radios home to say it is ok? It must be something in the house that is creating interference. Can you move the router to a different phone socket?
By the way I thought AOL supported more routers than one. My Thompson Speedtouch was bought from them! Oh and just because they don;t support it, doesn't mean it won't work!

I suppose I should have tried AOLs message board but have not found them much use in the past, worth a try though.
Yes, it only happens with the Router and it happens with both the Desktop PC which is connected by Ethernet cable and wireless with the Laptop.
I have moved everything to master socket, made no difference. There is no electrical device in my house which switches on/off at Midnight. As soon as the system clock on either the Laptop or Desktop turns 00:00 they lose connection. It used to be 1:00 before the clocks changed.
AOL do support the Thompson, but if you ask tech support which they have less problems with they always answer Netgear.
I have the same model router and have no such issue, but agree with the posting above to check what happens when you leave just the router connected without your pc's. You can then check uptime in the morning to see if it dropped.
Another thing to make a note of is your IP address before midnight tonight (unless you have a static one which I doubt) and also its lease time by running an ipconfig/all from a command window as there may be something causing your IP lease to renew every day.
