Is there any way for a ordinary Joe to get access to the trade "book" values (apart from "knowing someone" - which I don't)?

Many thanks - I dunno if Parkers is anywhere close to "secret" trade guides, but that trade-in is way more than I've been offered....

I know it's only worth what anyone'll pay, but I want to be on solid(ish) ground in asking for more...

The next owner being the 7th might hinder it... Not that it makes a jot of difference really, audi types seem to have an issue with owners though.......

I know :-) Nobody likes it - what can I say!

ETA - it's had a private plate before I had it - could that have affected the number of keepers shown (i.e. the change to/from the PP?)

Thanks - it has cosmetic issues, but not rusty wings :-)

Ordinary Joe can just look at similar cars on Autotrader. This will give you a more up to date idea of what ordinary Tom will be expecting to pay for ordinary Joe's car than any secret trade book.

Where do you think the secret book gets its information from? They don't set the prices in there, they look at what the market is selling them for.

No adding or removing a private plate does not affect the number of keepers shown on the V5C

I think you will find the trade guides use auction figures more than scanning autotrader for ideas..... Might be wrong though, with regards to retailing then yes i agree, using autotrader in order to be competitive is a god way of doing it.

Except I want to know what trade guides are telling Mr Trade he ought to bid on my car as a trade-in.

If I could get anywhere near the prices being asked on Autotrader, I'd be over the moon - but of course I know trade-in offers are going to be less than advertised retail or even private asking prices for the most part. I just want to know what general territory I should be in, I'm not going to cry into my beer about getting a couple of hundred short on a cost to change.

The issue with A3's is that people are obsessed with it being diesel, the 6 keepers and poor cosmetics is probably knocking its value

Rusty wings on a 55 plate A3? so they rust that quick?

Yes, I was just surprised to read that, haven't seen many rusty VAG group cars under 20 years old.
