Thinking of swapping my 944S2 for a 911 next year (as i'm 40 )
It'll be a daily drive (about 6K/year) having looked into it I'd really like a 993 but finding an Xtra £20K might be a little difficult so was considering a 964 (Xtra £10K ???).

Question is would the 964 cost me a lot more to keep on the road ?
I've seen this one
www.pistonheads.com/sales/detail.asp?i=32934&s=79
& like the fact that the engines been rebuilt as i don't fancy having to pay out BIG ££££ for such work!!!!
Is this the only problem with these cars or are there others that i should look out for (I'd intend getting an independent inspection doen but would like to try & sus-out a decent car B4 having it inspected)

having just been through this exercise at length,(also approaching 40!), trading up from a 944 2.7, and eventually having opted for a 968cab instead, I can sympathise. I do think your budget might need expanding a little.

the thing is, you'll undoubtedly be very familiar now with your 944, and the things that do and dont go wrong. when you move to a 964 its a whole new ball game. I saw many many ropey examples. The engine rebuild issue usually refers to a "top end" rebuild to address oil leaks - the additional bore size of the 964 compared to the 3.2 carrera rendered the 964 prone to oil leaks through the cylinder head joint face. Porsche did actually do a recall at the time, but few customers bothered. There are now enough 964s out there with a top end rebuild that I personally felt it was daft to look at any that hadnt had this done - though its not by any means a guarantee of curing oil ooze, as lots of things leak e.g power sterring shaft seals. I'm sure I missed some top examples by deciding this, but at the end of the day a top end rebuild is 4-6K no matter how you look at it.

The clutch and flywheel invariably need doing at some point, average 70-80K miles. The one youve posted has had these so a good start. The other major issue is the front wishbones which often need sorting.

I concluded that, even now, I'd have to spend 21K or more to get a really really good RHD example from a dealer and probably 17-18K privately. You dont say what condition your S2 is in but even a superb bridge spoiler model probably isnt going to get more than 6-6.5k from a dealer, maybe 8-9K privately if your lucky

Hence I think you may need to adjust your budget upwards a little.

Also you'll need to budget on a couple of grand at least in reserve in case of major grief.

thar's why in the end I went for a 968. similar to the 944 ref maintenence, much better performance, close to the 964 but a different driving experience, granted.

If youve not found it already, can I suggest Hartech's excellent downloadable buyers guide, and for more detail on the 964, Adrian Crawford does a very good downloadable 964 buyers guide with lots of pics. Neither are any substitute for an inspection!

My S2 isn't a bridge spoiler example but has had everything done when i got it. Hartec did full service including all belts, replace front wishbone, new disc's & pads refurbed calipers, it's just had a new cluch & is in Black with Linen leather!!!!!!!!!!
I'd not let it go for less than £7K

I recon i should be able to get a decent early 993 for £27 or a late'ish 964 for £17-18K.

It's either this or VX220 Turbo which from what i can make out would be faster & cheaper than the above BUT I've always hankered after a 911....
