Exhaust bungs

I've been reading a bit on these for the last couple of days - and most of what I've read seems to be absolute codswallop written by people who seem to have no idea what they're on about.

So my question is this: Is there any danger / detriment / reason why you wouldn't use one to quiet down a cat back exhaust system? Mine's ridiculously loud, but has come with one that I can bolt in place to quiet it down. I've read all sorts on restricting flow, even blowing head gaskets etc, right through to increasing performance.

I know there are some knowledgeable people on here so hopefully someone can shed some light.

Car is an unmapped EP3, cat back, panel filter etc.

The design of exhaust systems has become a complex part of the engine management systems on modern vehicles. I would imagine any such modification would be not recommended by the manufacturer and very likely to reduce performance. What are you hoping to achieve?

Sorry, original post amended. It's an asbo cat back system and I want to shut it up a bit on the commute to work.

I'm going to assume you have a 4 or 5 inch jap can on your EP3. The majority of the exhaust system is highly unlikely to be more than 2 or 2.5 inches in diameter, so I very much doubt a typical silencing insert would cause enough restriction to cause any flow problems.

Given that the after market exhaust almost certainly isn't set up to give the same back-pressure as OEM to scavenge properly, I see no particular reason to believe that it would make matters any worse than they are anyway. It's certainly not going to do anything particularly nasty to your engine beyond potentially slightly reducing power.

Personally, I'd probably buy an OEM exhaust and shove the stupid loud one on ebay, though.

the cat back pipe is 2.5, and the bung exit is 1.5"

Why's that then? Unless you are sitting idling for 5 minutes or revving from cold, you won't be annoying your neighbours.

I have a Spoon N1 on my DC5 and it's not a problem for the neighbours, as I'm quick to get the car moving and down the street in the mornings.

If your car has been mapped properly then maybe (although unlikely as its not a turbo). If not, then its probably been doing more harm than good anyway.
