A couple of questions on behalf of my dad who has a 993 turbo regarding insurance and trackers.

He has had it for 16.5 years, it is in lovely condition having covered less than 30k miles, and it has an insured value of £55k. He now feels that this is not enough as the price for low mileage turbos has risen, and his current insurer will not cover the increased value without the installation of a tracker.

This brings me on to my questions, any recommendations for alternative insurance brokers/companies to approach for a quote (he has been with the same broker for many years) and more importantly any recommendations for a tracker (he /i know zero about trackers). He is not keen to have the car messed about with installing a system that may become obsolete and need changing as technology may change. Some thing we have experienced in the past with 'Thatcham approved' alarm systems.

He his not looking for the lowest premium, he is looking for a policy that provides an appropriate level of cover. He doesn't want to put it on a classic policy.

Any advice would be appreciated.

PH

I would suggest at 55k he is well under-insured givne the miles. It might be worth asking a friendly specialist or even Porsche Club GP for a valuation.

If he had to go out today and buy one with those miles I'd imagine it would be 80k - quite possibly more. If he had lots of time and know the market then he could possibly get something a bit cheaper. But these are guesses, best to ask someone who knows

That is exactly his thinking, that it is worth in the region of £80k.

When he has asked his broker to increase the value they have said that the insurance companies will only cover it if a tracking device is installed. He is reluctant to have after market 'stuff' fitted, but if having a tracker is the norm then the experiences and opinions of those who have them or know a bit about them would be appreciated.

He has already spoken to our local specialist regarding a valuation, and I am taking some pictures at the weekend to send to the Porsche Club for a valuation.

A brochure was included with May's Porsche Post detailing the Porsche scheme offered by Lockton brokers - the insurer is a Chubb who have an excellent reputation and give great cover (agreed valuation, right to repair, comp cover for any driver included etc).

Having said that, I'm curious to know why he's against a classic policy?

I think he is against a classic policy because they do not generally carry no claims bonus. He already has another car on a classic policy, and wants to maintain a policy with no claims bonus in case he changes car to a newer one or gets another additional car.

Paul the Locktons club policy does carry no claims discount for classics and the service is brilliant.

Give them a ring and check out a quote, for me I am now getting the 944 for free biggrin

If your dad does decide to get a tracker I can recommend M Track (http://www.mtrackonline.co.uk/). It's Thatcham category 7 and doesn't require any changes to the cars wiring (it has its own power source). I have one in my car and it's been faultless.

As for insurers, have a chat with A Plan's Thatcham office. They halved my Turbo insurance at renewal plus my tracker is no longer mandatory.

I would recommend you go for a agreed value insurance. This way (God Forbid) if something does happen and you need to make a claim you are guaranteed to get the full value of the car. Otherwise with standard type insurance you are at the mercy of the valuer who always under value.

Would recommend

Chubb Insurance.
