Gopro Hero3+ Silver external mic issue

Bit of help needed chaps...

I've just bought a mic adaptor and mic from ebay for my Gopro, granted they where pretty cheap but I'd thought I'd do a quick test run in my car with the mic first near the exhaust and then under the bonnet and it's not worked. I've just got the sound through the internal mic as normal!

Am I doing something wrong? Do I need a powered mic? Or have I just bought some cheap st that doesn't work?

I tried with various external mics on my Hero 3 Black and just gave up in the end. Had random hissing noises, no sounds at all and there's also the well known issue of not being able to use the combo cable and wifi at the same time.

There's very little information about using external mics on Gopros, I asked their technical team and they recommended some massive powered Sennheiser mic which would be of no use on an action cam.

I've found that mounting the Gopro to the front numberplate and in the waterproof housing records better sound than having it near the exhaust anyway (for my car at least).

There should be no need for a powered mic on the Go Pro.

It sounds like you have a dodgy adapter cable or mic.

Have you got something else you can test the mic with?

I'll try it on my SLR, thanks for the e suggestion.

Just tested the mic on my Canon and seems to work fine, so it's either the Gopro or the adaptor.

Did you get any joy with this? I'm having the same issue. I think you have to have a 10 pin mini-USB adaptor, not the standard 5pin that most ebay touts are flogging as 'gopro adaptors'.

I've bought 2 so far and might just shell out for the unreasonably expensive GoPro branded one now... /gumble
