Hi all,

Just what causes tyre noise?
Is it any particular pattern?

How would one describe the pattern of a quiet tyre?

OK, so the answers I am not looking for are,,,,,

1/ Just what causes tyre noise? = tyres
2/ How would one describe a quiet tyre? = a stationary tyre.

What causes noise: Air being slapped / crushed.

The quietest kind of tyre: A slick.

interesting one, I would say the variables are,

Size/Width
Road Surface
Toe in/out
Suspension type and stiffness
Sound insulation/or lack of
Tyre Compound
Tyre Construction
Sidewall depth/stiffness

Actually, it depends if we're talking about drive by noise, or internal noise. I was assuming external (drive by) noise.

Interestingly, tyre manufacturers can change both the db level and tone with block design, I've seen some mad demos of tyres with identical db levels, but one of them having an unlivable high pitch whine.

Even more interestingly, the manufacturers can control the direction of the noise. This was great when all they had to care about was internal noise, as they could direct the sound out of the wheel arches and make for a quieter tyre internally.

Sadly the european lot got involved, and the tyres are now graded on drive by noise, so to get a lower noise score, some manufacturers might be sending the noise back into the car...

1. Tyre Tread Pattern Pitch Noise - A continuous high frequency whirring noise which resonates through the air. This tyre noise is generated by the impact of tread blocks hitting the ground.

2. Tyre Tread Pattern Pumping Noise - A hissing or whirring high frequency noise which is reflected from the tyre tread grooves. This tyre noise is generated when air is compressed between the tyre tread grooves where the tyre contacts the road.

3. Tyre Road Noise - Low to medium frequency tyre vibrations generated by the road surface which resonate through the car body into the cabin.

OP back.

Some very interesting answers.

For now I am only thinking about internal cabin noise.


So, from reading some of the above, it would indicate that tyres with smooth longitudinal grooves, and as minimum cross grooves (left to right of the tyre) or any diagonal grooves, should be the quietest ?
If the longitudinal grooves are of a pure strait line groove, then this should make for a quieter tyre?

OK, so perhaps certainly not the tyre with the most grip, but that's a compromise.

Damn misread that.
I find r888s and the like fairly loud from a low pitch point of view.

I've never owned a car that properly squeals come to think of it.

Motorbike tyres are quiet. Hmmm.

Thanks again all,

having looked around various on-line tyre sales sites, I can see the dB rating for many tyres.

The tyres I see as the quietest seem to be Goodyear Eagle LS2

These sound out at 67dB

Any more contenders?

Am I right in thinking for example 68dB is twice as loud as 67dB ?

dBs are based on a logarithmic scale, so, roughly speaking, as per your example, double the noise at 67 dB and you get a reading of 70 dB.

OK, getting there,

So from a tyre making 67dB of noise, and a different tyre making 68dB of noise, is that a 33% increase in noise generated?

It can also be down to how much sound deadening material you have around your wheel arch areas as the sound bounces round the wheel arch amplifying it abit like a sub woofer for tyres.
