Hiya

I'm about to replace the auxilliary drive-belt on my Chimp 400 because it's old 'n' crusty.

Can you really use silicone grease on them to keep them fresh? The idea of using /grease/ (i.e. slippery stuff) on something that relies on friction - I thought - to work came as a bit of a surprise to me.

Keep it clean boys...!

Personally I wouldn't do it, silicon is still a slippery thing so I can't see how the belt wouldn't slip.
Leave it as it is and replace when necessary - they are hardly expensive.

If it's noisy or squeeking, talcum powder works as does candle wax, with the engine running just gently press a candle along the inside edge.
BUT WATCH YOUR FINGERS!

FYI

Strangely enough, I found a can of belt dressing, purely by accident, in my local motor factor yesterday. A Lucas product I think it was.

It says it increases friction, which prevents / reduces squeal, and protects the rubber.

That does sound more suitable than silicone spray.

Go to your local bearing and belt distributor - BSL, Fenner etc - and they will sell you a can of belt conditioner spray for very little money indeed.
