S204 C350 CDI "grinding" when reversing
Discussion
Drove my C class for the first time since Sunday last night. My wife has used it a couple of times in the meantime. On reversing off the drive once I had applied some lock there was a "grinding" noise that you could also feel slightly through the steering wheel.
Reverse straight and it doesn't do it. Turn the wheel lock to lock stationary and it doesn't do it. Drive forwards and it doesn't do it. Only does it when reversing with some lock on, even then it doesn't do it straight away but only after a couple of revolutions of the wheel.
I had a poke around in the wheel arches and nothing seems amiss and there is no evidence of anything being out of place or being rubbed and worn away. The wheelarches happen to be really clean as 3 weeks ago I switched to the summer wheels and when I did so I cleaned them up. Its been fine since then so I have not messed that up.
The nearside wheelarch though did have a healthy splattering of gritty mud in it. Where we take the dog for a walk there are a couple of deep puddles that are tricky to avoid. My current thinking is that from driving through muddy, stony puddles a stone has been flicked up and got caught behind the brake disc splash guard. Going forward it's pushed down and out of harms way but in reverse it gets picked up and stuck against the disc as it rotates.
Is that madness or can anyone thionk of other possibilities? I'm going to whip the wheels off tonight for a better look.
