Just arrived home from a session with my GP. Having been diagnosed with an inoperable heart condition I'm now on an ace inhibitor, beta blocker, statin and asprin. That's on top of the prostate cancer I'm due to start treatment for later this month - surgery is ruled out as the heart problem is too severe to risk it.

The thing is, two years ago (I'm now 64) I was fit as a fiddle and though a bit overweight had no health issues apart from arthritis which affects my knees and fingers. Overnight, it seems, I've become my grandfather! I'm not feeling sorry for myself as I've a lot to look forward to - I've just bought an Audi A8 and have a couple of classic Rileys - but it does take the wind out of your sails when this happens.

I think what I'm really trying to say is if you're young and fit, enjoy it as much as you can, while you can. My head is still 35, the rest of me seems to be aging far more rapidly! Is anyone else in the same position, we could form a PH Wrinklies Racers sub-group.

I am from the same demographic as far as age is concerned - maybe a slightly earlier model even than you are, but definitely post WW2. Some days I think it's cardigan and slippers time, but others I am also still 35 - well 25 actually! Very sorry to hear of your ailments, and can only say use what you're left with as enthusiastically as you dare, cos you are only going to get older.

AF? If so, my father lived with AF for 20 years, and travelled the world visiting some very far flung places.

My father was told by his doctor at 50 that he wouldn't make 60 unless he had medication. Sadly he passed away on Good Friday, of a cardiac arrest. He had sky-high bp (medicated like yours OP), arrythmia, diabetes, gout, a pacemaker, a melanoma, two new hips, was considerably overweight and did no exercise, understandably. He was 83.

Sat opposite me at work I have an apprentice who is 22 years old, 20 stone and never eaten a vegetable in his life. Loves processed food and makes me cringe when I see and hear what he eats. Me on the other hand, 27, healthy, go to the gym 2-3 times a week, bike ride, eat at least 5 fruit/veg a day and was diagnosed with Cancer (not a bad one, luckily) a few months back. Hopefully all gone now.

Luck of the draw. Enjoy it while you can!

That's very much what I'm thinking. I guess I've been lucky to have had 62 illness-free years.
